Geographical Settings/Interpretations

In class today we began our Country Notebooks and I gave the following example of a Geographical setting and its Interpretation:

Geographical Setting: Pacific Northwest

Facts: Oregon & Washington are generally considered the Pacific Northwest. We are a part of the West Coast (vs. Mid-west, South or East Coast) While the Pacific Northwest is considered part of the West Coast, it has different terrain and weather; the area is known to be rainy, forested, with lakes and streams. Oregon and Washington have coastlines that are very rocky and the Pacific Ocean here is very cold, but produce salmon, oysters and other types of seafood. But, this is only true for the western portion of the Pacific Northwest; the central and eastern portions of these states are inland and have high desert and plains. We have several mountains—dormant/non-dormant—volcanoes that provide snow pack for water and winter sports. Because of where we live, people here tend to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, boating, fishing, hunting.

Interpretation: We are ‘more rugged’ than West Coast folks since we face harsher weather; as a result we tend to be more intrepid and are more ecologically/environmentally conscious than other regions; we are more individualistic/deterministic in our actions.

Chinese students are invited to post their in-class group work about a province in China. This will count as one of your eight required postings. American bloggers may comment as you wish.

HUBEI PROVINCE
Topography
Factors: Hubei is in the middle of china. The topography of Hubei province is a little complicated. The east, west and north of Hubei are mountains, in the middle of is campagna and knaps. So the integral of the topography is a basin. In Hubei province, 56% of land are mountains,24% is knaps,20% is campagnas and lakes. There are thousands of lakes in our province and changjiang river crossing it, so the resource of water is abundant.

Explain: Because of the complicated topography, we could develop many types of industries, for example, aquiculture, cultivation, forestry and so on. Except for that, we also can open some tourism projects. In the western of Hubei province, a well-known project---Three Gorges will be completed in few years later, so it can stimulate the growth of economy in Hubei province.

Location
Factor: Hubei is in the center of china ,is the cross of many provinces including Henan ,jiangxi ,Sichuan and etc.
It lies on the middle part of the Changjiang river .

Explain: with the convenience water and land transportation supply , many kinds of industry make a great progress in the short time without barriers. All kinds of goods and services can be delivered to the target market in a flash.

Climate
Factor Although the climate in Hubei province is very obvious in four seasons, it is quite extremely. That is a very hot summer and plenty cold winter with a mean annual temperature of 15oC-17oC -- the hottest month, July, averaging 30-38oC and the coldest month, January, 1-5oC.What’s more a very long time of this two season, which means a short time in the other two . Besides, it has a sub-tropical monsoonal climate, the wind is very large.

Explain Therefore, The person in Hubei province is quite intrepid. They are hard outside but soft inside. What’s more they can suit every season outside they need things in all seasons especially for winter and summer.

Hi! Wendi here from Oregon,
Oregonians truly must be intrepid this week as we have had a weekend of snow and freezing rain. Because of the usually mild and rainy winters, Oregonians are not used to driving on ice and snow and it causes many problems for travelers and businesses when employees cannot get to work. Public transportation can be slow or delayed. As I write, it is 7:30 and most people are waiting until the ice melts from the roads before travelling to work. This also affects our local economy as Christmas shoppers cannot get to the stores to spend their money!
I hope you are not experiencing the same in China!
